Morocco has legalized the therapeutic use of Cannabis/marijuana. In an overwhelming majority, the Senate passed the bill to legalize cannabis with a majority of 75 in parliament.

The north African country adopted Wednesday the law authorizing the therapeutic use of cannabis, a major reform for this North African country considered as one of the first producers of hashish in the world. Often cited as one of the purest forms of hashish and sought after in the European continent.

The legal use implies means it can only be used in medicine, cosmetics and even for industrial purposes.

This move has come after significant lobbying from American senators and the American Ambassador,  who are investing heavily in the production of ‘medical-grade marijuana’.

    Recreational use still banned

Recreational use remains prohibited and subject to prosecution.

Morocco is one of the world’s largest producers of cannabis and suppliers illegal by-products like Hashish.

As more multinational companies are setting up cannabis farms across the world, more attention has been diverted to Africa.

More countries are now decriminalizing the use of Marijuana in Africa with the latest being Morocco.

    Medical use of Cannabis

Cannabis is derived from delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound associated with the psychoactive properties of cannabis and is a mild analgesic. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the major component of medicinal cannabis and has been identified as providing relief from nausea and pain and also increases appetite.

Researchers are studying whether medical marijuana can help treat a number of conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and Crohn’s disease. Medical marijuana is legal in 33 states in the United States.

In the UK, according to the NHS guidelines, Private Doctors who are on the General Medical Council’s specialist register are now legally able to prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use.  This is the same for NHS and private providers.
