New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicted on federal charges
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing federal criminal charges, according to CBS News. Adams, 64, who was elected nearly three years ago on a platform to tackle crime in America’s largest city, now finds himself at the centre of multiple federal corruption investigations.
Although the indictment remains sealed, it marks a historic moment, as Adams could become the first sitting mayor in New York City’s history to face criminal charges.
In a video statement released late Wednesday, Adams said he will fight the charges and stay in office, asking New Yorkers for “prayers and patience.”
Federal prosecutors are expected to unseal the indictment on Thursday, when Adams is due to appear in court, according to CBS News.
The latest development follows a year of increasing legal scrutiny surrounding Adams and his team. In 2022, federal agents seized his electronic devices and raided the home of Brianna Suggs, his chief fundraiser. Investigators are reportedly looking into whether Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign accepted illegal donations from foreign governments, including Turkey.
Recent reports also indicate that prosecutors have broadened their inquiry to include potential campaign violations involving several other countries, including Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan.
