Mauricio Pochettino has held further talks with the Chelsea board over January signings but insisted he is happy with his forward options currently at his disposal.

A striker remains a top priority for the Blues this month having continued to struggle for goals this season.

Pochettino is set to lose one of his current options in Nicolas Jackson to the Africa Cup of Nations later this week while Christopher Nkunku, who missed the first four months of the season, is now struggling with a hip problem.

Ivan Toney – now valued at £100million by Brentford – and Victor Osimhen lead Chelsea’s shortlist of targets with Pochettino insisting on Monday the club are not in a position where they must sell before they can buy in order to comply with financial fair play regulations.

The Argentina also revealed he has held discussions with the Chelsea hierarchy over incoming business in recent days but believes his squad is well-equipped even in the absences of Nkunku and Jackson.

‘We are assessing the squad like always,’ Pochettino told a press conference on Monday.

‘We have a conversation with the owners and sporting director yesterday and today. We are looking at all the team for options.

‘But I am happy because we have different options to play in the striker positions and then we need our second line offensive players to step up and score and help the team score and win games.

‘I’m very positive, I’m happy with the squad and if something appears we will announce but at the moment we are working normally as we have done all season.’

Asked on how those talks with the Chelsea board went, Pochettino added: ‘Really good. We keep a good relationship and I think everything is very well.

‘Conversations, normal conversations that we need to have and if something appears we will say.’

Chelsea are in action away to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final showdown.

They return to Premier League action against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.
