Mason Mount’s brother slams ‘shameful’ criticism after backlash following Manchester United debut

Mason Mount’s brother has defended the Manchester United star after he came in for fierce criticism following his first team debut for the club against Wolves.

The midfielder played 68 minutes in Monday night’s 1-0 win against Gary O’Neil’s side at Old Trafford.

Mount was selected alongside Bruno Fernandes in an advanced midfield role but both players underwhelmed as United struggled past an impressive Wolves side.

Erik ten Hag said he was happy with Mount’s performance in his post-match press conference, and the Dutchman’s spoke glowingly of the midfielder’s ability since he joined the club from Chelsea.

But, after a pre-season when he was moved around in different positions, Mount struggled to impact proceedings against Wolves.

That led to criticism in some quarters, with talkSPORT tweeting a breakdown of Mount’s performance.

    Mason Mount vs Wolves

    0 goals
    0 assists
    0 chances created
    0 crosses
    0 tackles won
    0 accurate crosses
    0 aerial duels won pic.twitter.com/Rksf9AIDnk

It showed he created zero chances, made zero crosses, won zero tackles and didn’t win an aerial duel.

But given Mount is yet to feature for an entire 90 minutes for his new club, the criticism is entirely premature.

And the midfielder’s brother, Lewis, wasn’t having any of it and called the criticism ‘shameful’.

‘I’ve tried to let this go all day, but honestly, shame on you talkSPORT,’ Lewis wrote on his Instagram story.

‘These players, no, these PEOPLE get enough abuse without you adding fuel to the fire.

‘A reminder that he’s had a very successful 18 year career in football, and is a good, kind, human being, more than I can say for some of your “reporters”.’
