Marcus Rashford set for awkward Man Utd reunion at Borussia Dortmund

Marcus Rashford and Erik ten Hag could be set for an awkward reunion with the Manchester United star and former manager tipped to join forces in January.

A whole host of clubs around the world have expressed interest in Rashford whose United career is over after being left out of the squad by Ruben Amorim and admitting he is ‘ready for a new challenge’.

AC Milan were the frontrunners but they can only sign one English player this transfer window and have switched their attention to Manchester City wantaway Kyle Walker.

The Telegraph report that Borussia Dortmund are now the favourites to sign the forward on loan, with Monaco their closest rivals.

On paper, Dortmund seems the ideal place for the 27-year-old to revive his career, after Jadon Sancho did exactly that following a loan spell at the German club last season.

However, if Rashford goes to the Westfalenstadion, he may find a familiar face waiting for him.

Sky Sports Germany report that Dortmund are on the verge of sacking manager Nuri Sahin, with the club languishing in 10th in the Bundesliga.

It is said Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Bologna could determine Sahin’s fate and Ten Hag is a ‘serious candidate’ to replace him.

The Dutchman was recently spotted at the club and was given a tour by their technical director, and is ready to take over straight away having been sacked by United in October.

It’s far from a sure deal however as Dortmund also like Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeneß but they’d have to wait until the summer to sign him.

Rashford enjoyed the best season of his career under Ten Hag in 2022/23, finding the back of the net 30 times, but this was followed by a very poor campaign in 2023/24 that produced just eight goals.

That pair also clashed after the player called in sick for training last January but had actually been out partying in Belfast, leading to Ten Hag dropping him for an FA Cup game.

The England international’s drop in form has been a big factor in United’s decline over the past 18 months and was among a number of factors that lead to Ten Hag’s dismissal.

Following United’s 3-1 loss to Brighton on Sunday, Amorim shared an update on Rashford’s future at the club, saying: ‘It is his choice [not to play].

‘I don’t want to focus on this bad moment because in the games we lost, Rashford is not here. I don’t want to put this moment on Rashford. Rashford is out of this moment because he is not playing.

‘No matter what, I am not going to put out a player I don’t believe is the best for the team.’
