A man has been arrested after a girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on a theme park ride.

The 11-year-old had been at Adventure Island, a popular destination for families in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

Police were called to the park at around 3pm on Thursday, June 1 after receiving reports of an 11-year-old girl being sexually assaulted whilst on a ride.

The suspect was described as a white man, in his late 50s, with short, grey hair and wearing a green t-shirt and sunglasses.

In a statement, Essex Police said: ‘The victim is receiving support from specialist officers.

‘Investigating officers from Southend Criminal Investigation Department have arrested a 57-year-old man from Chelmsford in connection with this investigation. He has since been released on bail whilst enquiries continue.

‘We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this assault or have any further information to contact us.’

Adventure Island flanks the north end of Southend Pier in Southend-on-Sea and has been a theme park since 1976, when the land now forming the west side of the park was purchased by the Miller family.
