Pennsylvania man arrested after explosive found in luggage at US airport
Mark Muffley, 40, has been arrested by FBI agents for allegedly bringing an explosive device to a Pennsylvania airport on Monday.
He is accused of placing the device in his checked baggage for a flight to Orlando, Florida, but fled the airport after his name was called over the loudspeaker.
He was later apprehended at his home.
Transportation Security Administration officials discovered the device during a routine screening of his baggage, prompting them to call in FBI specialists, including a bomb technician, to examine it.
The device was found to contain fuses and explosive powder hidden in the lining of Mr Muffley’s rolling suitcase.
In addition to the explosive device, his bag also contained a can of butane, a lighter, a pipe with white powder residue, a wireless drill with cordless batteries, and two circuit breakers that were taped together.
FBI officials believe the explosive device contained a mixture of flash powder and commercial-grade fireworks, which were susceptible to ignite from heat and friction, and posed a significant risk to the aircraft and passengers.
Mr Muffley has been charged with possession of an explosive in an airport and possessing or attempting to place an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft.
He is due to appear in court on Thursday.
