Emergency services have rushed to a lake amid ‘reports of concern for the safety of a teenage girl.’
The alarm was raised shortly after 12.30pm.
Merseyside Police are in attendance at the Carr Mill Dam in St Helens, with an air ambulance also reportedly on the scene.
A spokesperson from the force said: ‘We can confirm that emergency services are responding to a concern for safety in St Helens today, Thursday 1 June.
‘At around 12.30pm we received a report of a concern for safety of a teenage girl at Carr Mill Dam on Garswood Old Road.
‘This incident is ongoing, and we ask people to avoid the area while we deal with this incident and thank you for your patience.’
ITV News reports that an underwater search team is currently working in the water.
The news comes after two teenagers died in an incident at a beach in Bournemouth.
Speaking this afternoon Dorset Police Chief Constable Rachel Farrell read out a statement to media gathered at Bournemouth International Centre.
She confirmed that the girl was from Buckinghamshire and the boy was from Southampton.
She said: ‘Following our initial inquiries, a man aged in his 40s who was on the water at the time, has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
‘As we have a person in custody, you will know there is only limited information I can give about the investigation.
‘However, to avoid further speculation, I am able to tell you that it’s clear that yesterday a number of people already in the water got into difficulty and we are investigating the circumstances or event that caused that to happen.
‘Early investigation indicates that there was no physical contact between a vessel and any of the swimmers at the time of the incident.
‘I can also confirm there is no suggestion of people jumping from the pier or jet-skis being involved.’
