Mae Muller has opened up about what it was really like being a part of Eurovision 2023 behind the scenes, while admitting she couldn’t help but ‘fangirl’ over her competitors.
Ahead of the song contest this year, which took place in Liverpool, the nation threw their support behind the 25-year-old, as she sought to bring home the win for the UK after Sam Ryder finished as the runner-up at last year’s competition.
While Mae’s performance of her track I Wrote A Song wasn’t unable to secure her the victory, with Sweden’s Loreen soaring to the top, she’s remained in high spirits ever since, holding her head up high while returning to the stage.
On Sunday June 11, the musician appeared at the Capital Summertime Ball with Barclaycard as a surprise performer, speaking exclusively with Metro.co.uk ahead of her turn to reminisce on her Eurovision memories.
When asked about what it was like interacting with everyone backstage, Mae admitted that one might have assumed that it would be ‘competitive and weird’… but it wasn’t the case.
‘The backstage… it’s a contest so you might think it would be competitive and weird but it was so lovely,’ she shared.

‘Every time you ran into someone it was just like, “Hey girl, oh my god.” It just felt very fan-girly.
‘I mean, I was fangirling for sure, so it was a very nice energy backstage and it felt like everyone just wanted everyone to win and you wanted to see each other do well, so that was really nice.’
While it may have been a light-hearted atmosphere, it was still a gruelling experience for the artist.

‘I knew it was going to be like a mad busy time, but I didn’t know just how bootcamp-esque – but I kinda liked it,’ she said.
‘I liked the fact that it was like all in. Until you do it, you just don’t expect it, what it’s going to be like, but it was good.’
As for how her time in Eurovision has had an effect on her, Mae feels she’s now an improved artist.
‘I feel like I’m a better artist from it now, because it’s just like every day honing in on one thing. So I think I definitely came out a stronger artist for sure,’ she shared.
