UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson shot dead: Luigi Mangione charged with murder
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old man, has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week.
Mangione was apprehended on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, roughly 280 miles west of New York City. A customer at the fast-food restaurant recognised him and alerted authorities.
A graduate of an Ivy League university and a member of a prominent Maryland family, Mangione was reportedly found carrying a firearm and a handwritten note that police described as revealing his “motivation and mindset.”
Following his arrest, Mangione appeared in a Pennsylvania court, where he was arraigned on five charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm and providing false identification. Bail was denied.
Later that day, New York investigators charged Mangione with murder and additional firearms-related offences.
Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back last Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where UnitedHealthcare was hosting an investor meeting. Authorities have stated that the killing was premeditated.
Mangione remains in custody in Pennsylvania and is awaiting further legal proceedings.
