Love interests, dream jobs and great clothes: ‘I pretend my life is a TV show – I’m on season five’

‘Ask yourself: “Would a season three girl do this?”‘ says self proclaimed It Girl, Macey Myers.

Macey is a non-profit consultant by day, TikTok star by night – and main character in her own TV show, always.

But camera crews don’t literally follow Macey around documenting her adventures. No, the 24-year-old simply lives her life as if she’s in a glossy Gossip Girl-style show airing on The CW.

Before the beginning of each season of her life, Macey makes a Pinterest board to help ‘script’ the upcoming months. She uses it to manifest what she wants to achieve, the experiences she wants to have, and the energy she wants to give off.

‘It’s given me more confidence but also, I think it’s helped with learning life lessons about putting yourself out there,’ says Macey, who lives in Washington DC.

‘Even if something bad happens, instead of sulking and being sad, I just remind myself it’s for the plot, and for the viewers.’

When Macey shared her way of life and ’empowering’ mindset on TikTok, the video quickly amassed more than 2.5 million views and nearly 500,000 likes.

The idea was born when Macey, originally from Atlanta, moved to Washington DC and, after nine months in the US capital, noticed that things were starting to change in her friendship circle, reminding her of a ‘season finale’ to a TV show.

‘Some of my friends were getting new jobs or travelling,’ she says. ‘It just felt like what I knew as normal was starting to change.’

Think of those series finales where everyone parts ways for the summer, or one half of the bestie-duo gets an ‘amazing opportunity’ abroad – you get the idea.

Macey continues: ‘That’s when my friend said: “New characters are being unlocked, new plot lines are being unlocked”.

Macey says she simply gets a ‘feeling’ when a new season is about to end and another begins. She says she’s appearing in season five, which began in May 2023.

Just before each season premier, during the ‘scripting phase’, Macey and her friends decide what this season’s main character (e.g. themselves) will be doing and wearing.

‘The characters we aspired to be in season three were Carrie Bradshaw and Serena Van Der Woodsen,’ says Macey.

‘To channel them, we decided the season would involve lots of going out on the town, meeting people, going on dates – just having a really fun time and fun experiences.’

Macey says that season three became her favourite so far.

‘Whenever I went out and was embodying this Carrie Bradshaw energy, I felt like I was playing a part.

‘But every single time I left the house, I got compliments from strangers, without fail. Then the fake confidence developed into real confidence.’

And the third series had Macey’s favourite season finale.

‘Me and some of my friends went to this crazy party. At the party, we ended up hanging out with this guy who is pretty known in our city on the political scene, and the ultimate villain character.’

Macey says the so-called bad boy followed them around all night and eventually won the girls’ attention. ‘He begged to come back with us, bought everyone pizza, and then we sent him home,’ says Macey. ‘It was just so season three.’

For Macey and her friends, season four was about flourishing in their careers.

During this season, a recruiter saw Macey’s TikToks and wanted her to join their luxury marketing team. Macey says: ‘A glamorous job had literally fallen into my lap, which seemed pretty on par for season four.’

Meanwhile, Macey’s close friend had always dreamt of working in the White House – and in season four she landed the interview.

‘It seemed like all of us were advancing in our careers or gaining opportunities we’d only ever dreamed about.’

She also had a love interest in season four – someone she’d plotted during the scripting phase.

Macey explains: ‘I met someone organically – his archetype was on my Pinterest board.

‘He seemed to be a unicorn of a man – one who worked for a nonprofit, did yoga, hosted dinner parties, wrote poetry, sent me jazz music, spoke to me in French, and traded books with me.

‘We proceeded to have the deepest connection I had ever had.’

Macey and her friends also check-in with each other at ‘business dinners’ mid-season, and fill each other in on their plot lines.

‘We would do a check in and be like: “Oh my God the most season three thing happened to me today”,’ she says.

One rule of Macey’s lifestyle is that you cannot revert to previous seasons, no matter how fun they were, because ‘shows don’t work like that’.

‘You can draw inspiration from previous seasons but you can’t wake up one day in a different season,’ she explains.

She says this helps with setting boundaries. ‘A might have accepted a guy stringing you along in season one – but a season three or four girl doesn’t.’

Macey, now in season five, says so far it’s ‘been crazy’.

‘It kicked off around my birthday. I think viewers will see me dating and having fun – while levelling up in my career and side hustles too.’

Macey says if there’s one thing she and her friends have learnt, it’s this: ‘We feel empowered. We finally know what we deserve.

‘We’re having fun and if putting ourselves out there doesn’t go well, it was for the plot, so it’s no sweat. It brings this ease to life.’

    XOXO, Metro.
