Liz Truss shuts down talk of rejoining EU as she says EPC ‘not about moving closer’

Liz Truss is in Prague for the summit of the European Political Community (EPC) which brings together the 27 leaders of the European Union with 17 leaders from the continent currently outside the club, including Britain, Turkey, Norway and Ukraine.

Liz Truss has insisted she is not looking to “move closer to Europe” after Brexit as she meets with European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Prague today.

Ms Truss will plead for unity from European leaders to “address the fundamental causes” of energy and migration challenges as she attempts to move beyond splits within her party. It is understood she used a five-minute speaking slot to stress the UK’s commitment to Ukraine, and to urge her fellow leaders to seek out more resilient energy supplies.

It comes as the new Prime Minister is facing challenges at home, having had to make a U-turn on Monday on tax plans that sparked turmoil in financial markets, and has used the event to continue to insist that rising interest rates are the consequence of global events.
