Liz Truss even managed to break a Doctor Who record as she resigned as Prime Minister after 44 days in office

Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation earlier today, after only 44 days in office.

And along the way, it seems she’s managed to break a few records, the most prominent being the shortest serving PM (as well as the only PM to be beaten by a lettuce).

Her stint also managed to be shorter than a singular series of Love Island, as host Iain Stirling pointed out, shorter than Kim Kardashian’s notoriously short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries, and even – would you believe it – shorter than Jedward lasted in the live shows of The X Factor.

And now another record has been thrown into the mix, and it’s pretty shocking.

The PM lasted so few days that she was the only one to not have an episode of Doctor Who air during their time in office (in the history of Doctor Who).

The beloved BBC sci-fi series, which began in 1963, has seen 14 Time Lords across the decades from William Hartnell when it first began, all the way through to David Tennant and Matt Smith, and most recently, Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa.

Liz Truss resigns: What happens next?

Liz Truss has stepped down as Conservative Party leader and UK Prime Minister after just 44 days. So what happens next?

Back when Doctor Who began, Harold Macmillan was PM, while the likes of Margaret Thatcher, Sir John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Boris Johnson have all seen a Time Lord on their screens.

As one person pointed out on Twitter: ‘Liz Truss is the only PM to not have an episode of #DoctorWho air during their premiership since the show began in 1963.’

‘The core issues,’ one person wrote, while another commented: ‘These are the stats I live for.’

‘No Tardis for Liz,’ someone else joked.

However, some people did clarify that Liz Truss will still be Prime Minister when this Sunday’s highly-anticipated episode Power of the Doctor airs, so at least she’ll have that one episode within her tenure, albeit after she’s announced resigning.

Jodie is set to bow out of the beloved BBC sci-fi drama alongside showrunner Chris Chibnall this weekend in the centenary special, The Power of the Doctor, ending her five-year reign as the 13th Time Lord.

Sex Education star Ncuti will then be taking over as the 14th Time Lord, saying at the time of the announcement that he was ‘deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.’

It’s the last of three specials that have aired throughout this year, marking the final instalment after the first two parts of the memorated trilogy having been broadcast throughout 2022, before Liz took her role in office.

The Power of the Doctor airs on Sunday, October 23 at 7.30pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
