Libya’s foreign minister says December polls could be delayed

Najla al-Mangoush says the government is doing everything in its power to hold the December vote but challenges persist.

If Parliament refuses to approve an electoral law, Libya’s foreign minister rejects to rule out the possibility that national elections held on December may be postponed.

On Tuesday, the UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, said time was running out for Libyans to establish a legal framework that would allow elections to take place on time.

Early August talks in Geneva revealed deep divisions over when and how elections should be conducted, as well as what types of elections should be held and on what constitutional grounds.

After meeting with Algerian officials, Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush told a news conference in Algiers, “We have put in place everything required to go towards elections, offering financial, logistical, and material support to the elections commission.”

“I can’t say if the elections will be postponed or not, but we’re working hard to ensure they occur on December 24,” she said.

“However, we are still waiting for Parliament to pass the elections law… This could cause the election to be stopped or postponed,” she added.

The minister also stated that a “consultative meeting” of neighbouring nations and “friendly states” will be held in late September or early October, with election security being a primary concern.
