Knife attack at Slovak school leaves two dead
An 18-year-old student carried out a knife attack at a school in eastern Slovakia, killing two women aged 18 and 51 and injuring another young woman.
The attack occurred in Spisska Stara Ves, a village of 2,000 near the Polish border, around 13:00 local time (12:00 GMT). The victims included two students and a teacher, according to police.
Initially, authorities reported the suspect was on the run, urging locals to avoid him. However, he was quickly apprehended. “Thanks to the quick detention of the suspect, there is at present no immediate danger and police are taking further necessary measures to ensure safety,” the interior ministry said in a statement.
Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while the education and interior ministers travelled to the scene.
In a statement, a Slovak student union said it was “shaken” by events.
“Schools should be a place where young people grow, learn and dream of a better future. Instead, we are witnessing violence and hatred finding their way into our classrooms,” the statement said.
