Kendall Jenner slammed for 818 Tequila ad
Supermodel Kendall Jenner is facing backlash thanks to a new campaign for her tequila brand.
The California launch of her controversial 818 Tequila brand saw Jenner in ads, in which she can be seen posing on the agave farm in Jalisco, Mexico. The internet had a massive problem with her outfit – a cowboy hat, earrings and a loose cotton shirt.

KEY POINTS
- Kendall Jenner tequila ad slammed for cultural appropriation
- Some argue she’s just the latest to join the celebrity tequila game
- Sexism in how Jenner is being treated compared to George Clooney
Twitter users brought up previous claims made that Jenner was trying to “colonise” and “gentrify” tequila by starting the brand with “zero knowledge on Mexican culture and calling it ‘818 tequila” in reference to the Calabasas, California area code.
A few online looked at the deeper implications of Jenner’s new business Which @talkfastloueh outlined on Twitter, discussing the branding’s lack of respect for the spirit’s history and cultural importance, how the company would be taking away opportunities from existing, Mexican-owned tequila businesses and the potential worker wage exploitation that could occur.
Some online say Jenner is just the latest celebrity to join the alcohol game, some alluded to sexism as the reason public opinion was so strong compared to the lack of criticism The Rock and George Clooney have faced.
Kendall Jenner has notably disabled comments on the post and has yet to make any public statement addressing the backlash.
