Sunday’s newspaper leads report on various stories with only the news of Kemi Badenoch’s appointment as Conservative Party leader on several front pages.
There’s a handful of royal stories on several tabloid front pages this morning and some showbiz news.
The upcoming US election finds some coverage on the UK newspapers – although perhaps not as much as you’d expect considering the election is just days away.
The back pages lead on two stories: Arsenal and Manchester City’s Premier League losses over the weekend, giving Liverpool a major boost in the title race and England’s slim loss to New Zealand in rugby ‘thriller’ at Twickenham.
‘Kemi Badenoch wins Tory leadership election’
‘Badenoch will side-line Tory politics including drive to net zero,’ reports the Sunday Telegraph.
The Sunday Telegraph quotes Kemi Badenoch as saying: “It’s time for a fresh start” – noting she is the first black woman to lead a major UK political party. The paper says she has signalled she will move the party away from the errors of her predecessors and in a new direction.
It includes side-lining former Tory policies such as the drive towards net zero, anti-smoking legislation and the Renters’ Rights Bill, the paper says. It goes on to note that she must now face the challenge of winning back voters who switched to Reform.
‘Her loyal supporters are expected to be handed cabinet roles,’ says the Sunday Times.
The Sunday Times also highlights the fact she is the first black woman to lead a significant political party in Europe. Her cabinet is expected to feature her loyal supporters – such as Andrew Griffith, Claire Coutinho, Alex Burghart and Julia Lopez. The paper says her first major challenge will come down to whether she supports the chancellor’s budget.

The i newspaper leads with its own exclusive polling which suggests the Conservative Party have ‘inched ahead’ after Labour revealed its Budget.
‘Badenoch tells party to get honest about their mistakes,’ reports The Independent.
The Independent says the new Tory leader has told her party that it’s time for them to get honest about their mistakes. She told them they must face the hard truths in order to give the party a new start and win back their voters from Refom.
‘Labour challenge Badenoch to back their budget,’ reports The Observer.
The Observer says the Labour government threw down a challenge to Badenoch – telling her to back the chancellor’s plan. The paper notes a big and clear political divide threatens to open up between the two parties over economic policy and the future of public services.
‘Royals considering dropping empire’
‘Royals consider dropping the word ’empire’ from the honours titles,’ reports the Mail.
The Mail on Sunday reports on claims made in a royal biography that suggest talks have been held about dropping the word empire from the King’s Honours. Under the plans, someone who is awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) could instead choose an Order of British Excellence. But the colonial-era titles would continue for those who wanted them.
‘King and William made £51 million last year from imposed levies,’ reports the Sunday Times.
The Sunday Times has an investigation into the property empires owned by King Charles and Prince William. The paper says the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall made a combined £51m last year from the armed forces, the NHS, schools, mining companies and big businesses. It says the duchies imposed levies for the right to cross rivers, offload cargo, run cables under beaches and even dig graves. The paper says the duchies operate as commercial landlords but are exempt from paying corporation or capital gains tax.
‘Duchy properties failing to meet energy standards,’ reports the Sunday Mirror.
The Sunday Mirror says “scores” of properties owned by the Duchy of Cornwall fail to meet energy standards and that tenants are complaining of damp homes. The paper says residents are struggling to keep their homes warm with some of them ending up in fuel poverty.
