Kansas City shooting: One dead and 21 injured near Super Bowl parade
During the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade in Missouri, one person died while 21 others sustained injuries in a shooting incident.
Officials disclosed that eight victims faced immediate life-threatening conditions, with seven others enduring injuries that could potentially be life-threatening. Fortunately, all nine children among the wounded are expected to recover.
Police have apprehended three suspects in connection to the shooting.
The gunfire erupted west of Union Station, the downtown Kansas City train station where the parade concluded around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT), drawing thousands of fans to witness the celebrations.
According to local reports, Kansas City Chiefs players were still present on stage when the initial shots were fired, prompting the watching crowd, including the city’s mayor and his family, to seek shelter.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves affirmed that officers swiftly responded to the gunfire, initiating an immediate investigation. The Fire Department also provided prompt aid to the injured.
Over 800 police officers were already deployed to monitor the parade, with the city’s fire department on standby to offer medical assistance if necessary.
