Jurgen Klopp accuses referee Paul Tierney of having an agenda against himself and Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has hit out at Paul Tierney, accusing the referee of bias against himself and Liverpool following their win over Tottenham.

Liverpool beat Tottenham 4-3 at Anfield on Sunday in a thrilling encounter that ended in much controversy.

Diogo Jota scored the 94th minute winner just moments after Richarlison had completed Spurs comeback from 3-0 down inside 15 minutes, but both Klopp and Ryan Mason questioned the legality of both goals.

The former was booked for celebration Jota’s goal in the face of the fourth official, but Klopp later claimed that Tierney said something to him while dishing the yellow card.

‘How they can give a foul on Mohamed Salah [before Spurs’ equaliser]?’ he said told Sky Sports.

‘We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us, he has said there is no problems but that cannot be true. How he looks at me, I don’t understand it.

‘In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand. My celebration was unnecessary, which is fair but what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not ok.’

In his post-match press conference, Klopp refused to reveal what exactly Tierney had said but continued to moan about the referee who was in charge of this same fixture last season which saw Andy Robertson sent off and Harry Kane escape a red card when he too could have walked for a bad foul.

‘The problem is I have to mention, Paul Tierney in a season which is important didn’t give Harry Kane a red card – and I love Harry Kane – and gave Robbo a red card. It is not the first time, there are so many things.’

Klopp’s comments are likely to incur the wrath of the Football Association, especially as this is not the first time the German has questioned the officials and acted in an untoward manner on the touchline.

‘We are role models but first and foremost human beings,’ the manager, who notably injured his hamstring while celebrating the winner, added.

‘I didn’t say anything to the fourth official but turned around to him to celebrate, I got a yellow card, I think he thought I should have got a different punishment.

‘So fair punishment for behaving not the right away. That’s it. I will have pain for a few days, Mr Tierney not. I will be ready to do what I always do and the celebrations if we have something to celebrate will be much calmer.’
