Jonnie Irwin has given an intimate interview from Spain, where he’s currently holidaying with his wife Jess and their three young sons.

Jonnie, who marked his 50th birthday on Saturday, revealed earlier this week that he was jetting off in search of blue skies.

Speaking from Spain, the doting dad-of-three shockingly revealed that he’d suffered a health setback over summer and was ‘sent home to die’.

The A Place in the Sun presenter confirmed last November that he had terminal cancer after a tumour in his lung spread to his brain.

Over summer, Jonnie ended up in a hospice because the strong painkillers he’s required to take triggered intestinal complications.

Speaking about the ordeal to HELLO!, Jonnie said: ‘They sent me home to die but I slowly started to get food in me and I started to feel stronger and stronger and I had a really good summer.’

As for his getaway in Costa del Sol with his wife, four-year-old Rex and twins Rafa and Cormac, three, Jonnie told the outlet: ‘I feel really privileged to be able to celebrate my birthday looking at blue skies and with sand between my toes.

‘I had an early birthday party at the start of the year because I didn’t think I’d make it. It was like being at my own wake; lots of fun, lots of dancing. But here I am. I view it as a complete triumph.’

Jonnie revealed on Tuesday that he was leaving the UK when he uploaded a video of himself and his family at the airport.

Jonnie – who was fresh out of hospital where he’d been receiving treatment for jaundice – told his Instagram followers: ‘I woke up this morning feeling a bit better, I’m still slightly jaundiced but I’m about to jump on a flight to southern Spain.’

He went on: ‘I did clear it with my oncologist, he said “there are hospitals in Spain and you don’t play by the rules anyway”.’

Jonnie added: ‘But my thoughts are, that’s probably part of my success so far.

‘Fingers crossed my liver continues to get a bit better. Me and family, we wake up tomorrow to blue skies in southern Spain.’

It’s lovely to hear that Jonnie has been having such a wonderful time in the Spanish sunshine!
