Joe Biden hails end of Iraq mission as US withdraws combat troops
The Times says the White House has announced the withdrawal of US combat troops from Iraq, after almost two decades of fighting.
President Biden confirmed last night that the US’s combat mission in Iraq was over after a meeting with Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Iraq’s prime minister, in the Oval office.
“I think things are going well, our role in Iraq will be . . . to continue to train, to assist, to help and to deal [with] Isis as it arises but we’re not going to be, by the end of the year, in a combat zone,” Biden said.
