Japan volcano ERUPTS: Smoke billows out popular tourist spot – lava warning issued
The Daily Express says The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the warning level for Mount Aso to three on a scale of five. Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture erupted at around 11:43AM local time (3:30AM). The level 3 volcanic activity alert was issued soon after, urging those nearby not to approach the area.
The alert covers the city of Aso, the town of Takamori and the village of Minami-Aso.
Pyroclastic flow triggered by the eruption travelled almost a mile from the crater and volcanic ash reached a height of about 3,500 metres.
According to the first reports, no one was injured. The eruption occurred in the south-west of Japan. CCTV cameras captured rocks as they flew into the air.
