Jannik Sinner suffers from ‘uncontrollable shaking’ in worrying scenes at Australian Open

Jannik Sinner suffered from ‘uncontrollable shaking’ during his win over Holger Rune at the Australian Open on Monday to leave fans worried.

Italian star Sinner, the top seed in the men’s singles at Melbourne Park, conjured up a 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory over Rune to reach the quarter-finals.

But there were worrying scenes for the world No.1 during the third set, with Sinner requiring an 11-minute medical check in order to continue.

Sinner was struggling with the heat – with footage going viral on social media – and former world No.1 Jim Courier declaring that the 23-year-old looked like a ‘zombie’ on commentary duties.

‘Sinner suffering from uncontrollable shaking,’ one tennis fan wrote on Reddit alongside a video of Sinner sat in his chair during a changeover.

Speaking after the match, Sinner said: ‘I was not feeling really well. I think we saw that today I was struggling physically.

‘I knew that it was going to be very, very difficult today, playing against a tough opponent but also playing against myself a little bit.

‘I at least felt slightly better when I went back on court. I felt like the face looked a little bit better, the colour was a little bit back. The doctor gave me some medication.’

Rune, meanwhile, added: ‘Obviously it’s perfectly fine that you check [with the doctors].

‘It was a very warm day today, very humid, so I was also feeling it. It’s fair that he got checked.

‘It took longer than I expected. It was around 10 minutes, maybe even more. So that was a bit brutal in the middle of the [third] set.

‘They checked him on the court, and the umpire said he needed further checks, to make sure he was all right. Then he came back firing, so I don’t know what they did.’

Sinner, the defending champion at the Australian Open, will lock horns with eighth-seed Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles.
