Jamie Carragher tells Arsenal to let Chelsea sign £65m star

Jamie Carragher has advised Arsenal to give Chelsea and other Premier League rivals a free run at £65m transfer target Matheus Cunha.

Few players have been the subject of more intense transfer speculation during the January transfer window than Wolves star Cunha.

The Brazil international has thrived at Molineux since his move from Spanish side Atletico Madrid in 2023, reaching double digits in both of his seasons in the Premier League.

Cunha, 25, already has ten league goals this season in a Wolves team facing a huge fight to stay in the Premier League, currently sitting 18th, one point from safety.

Wolves’ poor form cost Gary O’Neil his job last month but results have not picked up under new boss Vitor Pereira, who recently declared Cunha was ‘not for sale’.

That has not stopped a host of clubs sniffing around for the talented forward, however, with Arsenal long-term admirers.

The Gunners have at times struggled for creativity in the final third this season and Cunha would bolster Mikel Arteta’s attacking options as Arsenal look to chase down Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Arsenal face plenty of competition for Cunha, however, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest all registering an interest in the Wolves ace.

Carragher believes it could be a blessing in disguise if Arsenal were to miss out on Cunha as the Liverpool legend isn’t sure where the Brazilian would fit into Arteta’s squad.

Asked if he would sign Cunha if he was in charge at the Emirates Stadium, Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘He’s a good player but I wouldn’t be paying £65m for him. I’m not sure where he would play for Arsenal.’

Carragher does, though, believe Arsenal should look to bring striker target Benjamin Sesko to the club to bolster Arteta’s options up front.

Kai Havertz is Arsenal’s top goalscorer this season with eight and the Gunners lost Gabriel Jesus to injury earlier in the month.

Asked whether Arsenal should target Sesko, Carragher added: ‘Deal. They need to sign a forward otherwise they won’t win the Premier League.’

Despite the widespread interest in Cunha, there is a chance he remains at Wolves for the rest of the season.

‘I don’t know,’ Wolves boss Pereira said last week when asked if the club had rejected any bids for the player. ‘He’s my player and he’s not for sale.

‘He’s committed to us. He’s never asked to leave the club, he wants to help the team, he wants to be with us.’

Wolves suffered yet another defeat at the weekend as they lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal. They face local rivals Aston Villa on Saturday.
