‘It’s sad’ – Fernando Alonso reveals the biggest regret from his Formula 1 career

Fernando Alonso has revealed that not winning a Formula One title with Ferrari is his biggest regret from his 22-year career.

One of the best drivers of his generation and among the most talented to ever race in the sport, Alonso has had a long and largely successful time in F1.

So far, the 42-year-old has two world championships, 32 wins, 104 podiums and 22 pole positions to his name.

However he could well have won even more, narrowly missing out on the championship in 2007 with McLaren to Kimi Raikkonen and also in 2010 and 2012 with Ferrari to Sebastian Vettel.

The Spaniard later made an ill-fated return to McLaren where he was unable to even challenge for points most of the time, before taking a sabbatical and it is only this season with Aston Martin that he has been able to get back to the front of the grid.

Of all those moments, Alonso’s biggest regret would be the lost titles with the Scuderia, telling the High Performance Podcast: ‘Winning a championship with Ferrari – that would probably be the first thing I’d choose.

‘If I can go back in time to 2010, 2012, we were within a few laps to winning a championship and that could have changed a little bit the outcome of many things and the history behind a few things.’

On both occasions, Alonso and Ferrari lost out to Vettel and Red Bull at the season finale, despite actually leading the championship in 2010.

The veteran racer also admitted that with the benefit of hindsight he would have cherished his earlier triumphs more, adding: ‘What I regret for sure, was not enjoying more my time and my career.

‘You know that I’m at the end of it. There is a new life, you know in a few years’ time for me without driving and when I look back to my career, I will see a lot of good things and friendships and incredible experiences but, yeah, I should have enjoyed more.

‘I won the championship in Brazil, 2005 and 2006, and I hardly remember anything from those afternoons and nights, which is sad.’
