Italy cable car disaster: 14 dead in Italy cable car tragedy

At least 14 people have died after a cable car in northern Italy plunged to the ground.

Among the reported dead, five are reported to be Israelis. One child was seriously injured and is expected to be the only survivor.

The tragedy occurred when a cable car linking Italy’s Lake Maggiore with a nearby mountain fell to the ground, officials said.

Shocked to hear of the Stresa cable car crash at Mottarone in Italy. I filmed this close to the crash site in 2017, just after it had reopened after refurbishment. 😢 pic.twitter.com/K0zsCFc6G7

The cable car was heading up the mountain when it fell some 20 metres to the ground and then rolled several times down the steep slopes before being stopped by trees.

The Stresa-Mottarone lift had recently re-opened following the slow lifting of restrictions.

“It’s a terrible moment for me and for our community and I think also for the whole of Italy. Especially now that we were just beginning to restart (after the pandemic),” Marcella Severino, Stresa’s mayor told broadcaster RAI.
