Israeli bombing of northern Gaza leaves 87 dead or missing
Israeli airstrikes on multiple homes in northern Gaza have resulted in at least 87 people dead or missing, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. The strikes, which occurred overnight and into Sunday, also injured around 40 individuals in the town of Beit Lahiya, a location that was one of the initial targets of Israel’s ground invasion nearly a year ago. The Israeli military stated that the attacks were precise strikes aimed at Hamas targets.
For the past two weeks, Israel has conducted a large-scale operation in northern Gaza, claiming that Hamas has been regrouping in the area. Palestinian officials report that hundreds have been killed and the health sector in northern Gaza is on the brink of collapse.
The US has urged Israel to consider a ceasefire in light of the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. However, both Israel and Hamas have shown little interest in negotiating a ceasefire, especially after discussions stalled in August.
Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon – ‘widespread panic’
In Lebanon, Israel continues to bomb the country, with ongoing airstrikes aimed at wiping out banks they say are used by Hezbollah.
The Israeli military issued 24 warnings of airstrikes in less than an hour, mostly for southern Beirut with others in the southern and east of Lebanon. Two strikes hit close to Beirut airport as passenger planes were still landing.
The UN’s envoy to Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis, wrote: “Widespread panic after new evacuation orders. A brief window to escape to safety”
Recently, the Lebanese army reported that three of its soldiers were killed in an Israeli strike on their vehicle in southern Lebanon.
On Saturday, a drone reportedly targeted the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but there were no casualties reported. Hezbollah fired around 160 projectiles into Israel on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries from those attacks.
