Israel tells everyone in Gaza City to leave
The Israeli military has ordered all residents of Gaza City to evacuate south to the central Gaza Strip due to intensified operations in the north. Leaflets dropped from aircraft instructed people to leave the “dangerous combat zone” via safe routes leading to shelters in Deir al-Balah and al-Zawaida. The UN expressed deep concerns about these evacuation orders.
This is the second time Gaza City residents have been asked to evacuate since the war began. Israeli forces have recently re-entered several districts, targeting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters. Hamas claims that Israel’s actions are jeopardising ceasefire and hostage release negotiations ongoing in Qatar.
Despite the evacuation orders, many residents are reluctant to leave. Ibrahim al-Barbari, a local resident, expressed his plans to stay, citing the indiscriminate nature of Israeli bombings. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that some residents are unable to leave due to the intensity of the bombings.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated they conducted a counterterrorism operation against Hamas and PIJ fighters, facilitating a civilian evacuation before engaging in combat. They also reported killing dozens of fighters and dismantling an underground tunnel.
The UN and other international bodies have raised alarms about the humanitarian crisis, highlighting overcrowding and limited resources in the evacuation areas.
