Israel says it will open new aid routes into Gaza
Israel has approved opening two humanitarian aid routes into Gaza following a strike on a food charity – which killed 7 aid workers, including three British ex-servicemen.
Since the attack on the World Central Kitchen (WCK) charities have been pausing aid going into the territory due to concerns over staff safety.
The Erez Gate in northern Gaza will be temporarily re-opened for the first time since the start of the war and the Ashdod Port will be opened for humanitarian aid deliveries.
More aid from Jordan will be allowed to enter via the Kerem Shalom Crossing.
The news came just hours after US President Joe Biden spoke to Israel’s PM for the first time since the 7 aid workers died.
A readout of the phone call between Biden and Netanyahu shows Biden warned Israel it must take steps to prevent civilian harm and humanitarian suffering if it wanted to maintain US support.
It’s understood that Biden requested the re-opening of the corridors in the phone call. It marks a significant shift in US Policy – the first time that Washington has attempted to leverage American aid in order to influence the conduct of the war in Gaza.
