Is PMQs on today? Rishi Sunak to face PMQs ahead of Rwanda vote
Today at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will face Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer ahead of a crucial Commons vote on the government’s Rwanda bill. The bill has faced internal dissent, with two Conservative Party deputy chairmen and a ministerial aide resigning in protest on Tuesday.
Despite the rebellion within the party, Downing Street remains optimistic about the bill’s overall success in tonight’s vote. If approved, the legislation will proceed to the House of Lords, where peers will have the opportunity to propose amendments.
The controversial bill aims to revive the government’s proposal to send certain asylum seekers to Rwanda, to discourage illegal crossings in small boats across the English Channel. Deputy chairs Lee Anderson and Brendan Clarke-Smith resigned to support an amendment that strengthens the bill, gaining the backing of around 60 Tory MPs.
Notably, at least four Conservatives, including former cabinet ministers Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman, have indicated their willingness to vote against the bill unless further improvements are made.
