I’m A Celebrity… South Africa star Carol Vorderman was left gasping during the latest Bushtucker Trial, admitting that she was facing her biggest phobia.
On tonight’s episode of the ITV series, Amir Khan became the third celebrity to be eliminated after the campmates took part in the first celebrity vote in the show’s history.
Elsewhere on the programme, former Countdown whizz Carol and Olympian Fatima Whitbread teamed up to win stars for camp and put dinner on the table.
While Carol, 62, was initially raring to go and conquer the challenge, when she and Fatima, 62, began, she realised it was an extremely difficult feat.
The TV personality had to hold her breath while going underwater in several tanks in order to get her hands on stars, facing creatures such as crocodiles and snakes, while turning to a small breathing hole for air when she needed it.
Explaining that drowning was her biggest phobia, Carol began to panic at one point as Fatima – who wasn’t inside the underwater tanks – reassured her: ‘Let it settle, you’re fine. You can do it, just calm yourself.’

Having put seven out of 10 stars in her bag, Carol put a stop to the challenge when she was faced with going into a tank with snakes, as she had seen that one of the animals had wrapped itself around the breathing hole.
As Carol got out of the tanks, apologising profusely to her trial partner, Fatima stated: ‘Don’t be sorry, we’ve all got our limitations on what we can do.’
While speaking to co-hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, Carol explained the root of her terror.

‘I’m sorry I might even cry. My one real fear is drowning. I could see there was a snake in the breathing hole,’ she shared, while Fatima told her that she ‘conquered’ her fear.
‘It’s the only time I’ve been like this about a phobia in my life,’ Carol added later.
When the duo returned to camp, they refrained from sharing too much detail about how terrifying the trial truly was.

Nonetheless, some of the campmates cottoned onto just how negatively Carol was impacted.
Dancer Jordan Banjo remarked: ‘She always had a smile on her face. Came back today, she got seven stars, but it looked like it took a lot out of her to do it.’

Meanwhile, musician Myleene Klass added: ‘I know Carol, and Carol is the most fearless woman, she’s so strong. And she came back quite shell-shocked from the trial.
‘That’s all you need to know about how hard that trial must have been.’
I’m A Celebrity returns tomorrow at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
