Idris Elba doesn’t know what a Colin the Caterpillar cake is and we are shook to the core

Idris Elba may have access to the best food in town – we know, we’ve spoken to his personal chef – but quite frankly, there’s just no excuse for him not knowing what a Colin the Caterpillar cake is.

When he’s working away from home on movie sets, the Luther actor typically travels with his own cook, King The Chef, who whips up the freshest delicious meals that cater to Idris’ vegan diet.

These days, Idris, 50, no doubt enjoys the richest of desserts in town but you can’t beat a good old-fashioned Colin the Caterpillar, which most of us regular folk have enjoyed at birthdays at some point in our ordinary lives.

Many of us remember the sheer delight of getting a chocolatey Colin the Caterpillar cake for our pre-teen birthdays but, apparently, this whole phase completely missed Idris who has admitted to never hearing of the famous Marks & Spencer cake.

The British actor sat down with Dev Griffin on his Heart evening show this week and was put in the hot seat to answer a series of random, burning questions.

‘Idris Elba, have you ever had a Colin the Caterpillar cake at your own birthday party?’ Dev asked, to which his guest responded: ‘No.’

After a delay and looking puzzled, Idris asked: ‘Can I ask you a question. Who is Colin the Caterpillar? Is that bad?’

Dev couldn’t believe his ears and yelled: ‘Producer Zoe, could you Google Colin the Caterpillar please?’

Idris cheekily fired back: ‘If you have to Google him then I don’t know who he is.’

Dev proceeded to inform Idris of the news event he may have missed, explaining: ‘There’s a huge lawsuit going on at the moment. There’s also a Cuthbert the Caterpillar. There’s a whole scandal going on at the minute.’

‘How did I miss the lawsuit?’ Idris replied feigning shock.

The presenter said: ‘I’ll explain it to you afterwards, I feel like you could pull some strings and make this into a Hollywood blockbuster. It’s the story that deserves to be told.’

After being shown a photo of a Colin cake, Idris laughed and wondered: ‘Looks lovely actually, did you bring one?’ before explaining that he was fasting at the moment and was getting ready to eat, joking that he was so hungry he ‘nearly ate the phone’.

In recent years, M&S had been locked in a legal dispute with Aldi after claiming the supermarket’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar was ‘too similar to Colin’.

However, the dispute was settled in 2022 when both supermarkets confirmed an agreement had been struck although details of the ‘confidential’ deal were not revealed.

For the love of all that’s good, get Idris a slice!
