‘I will be sure when I’m in the ring’ Oleksandr Usyk reveals fresh doubts over Tyson Fury fight in February

Oleksandr Usyk is still not fully convinced his undisputed heavyweight title showdown with Tyson Fury will go ahead in February.

WBO, WBA and IBF champion Usyk and WBC king Fury were on collision course earlier this year until their fight fell through in spectacular fashion in April.

There was a fresh breakthrough last month with a deal agreed for the two heavyweight champions to finally meet on 23 December in Saudi Arabia following Fury’s fight with Francis Ngannou.

Fury was given an extremely tough night’s work against the former UFC champion, left battered and bruised in their non-title bout in which he scraped a split decision win.

With ‘The Gypsy King’ needing more time to recover, his date with Usyk was pushed to February next year.

While contracts and agreements are all in place, Usyk still has his doubts over whether that fight will go ahead as planned.

‘I´m not 100% sure. I will be sure when I´m the ring,’ Usyk told Associated Press.

‘I will stand in one corner, Tyson Fury will stand in the opposite corner, between us a referee in a white shirt, and only when I hear the sound of a bell – that´s when I´ll understand that yes, the game is on.

‘I want this to work out, I want this fight to happen. The fact that it is postponed is no problem to me. I´m satisfied.

‘I don’t care about material things. I care for the path I follow.’

While Fury vs Usyk has been delayed, hosts Saudi Arabia still plan to put on a major boxing event on the 23 December.

Latest reports suggest Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder are now close to finalising deals to fight in separate bouts on that night, with hope of bringing them back to the region to fight each other later next year.
