‘I really believe that’ – Sergio Aguero makes Arsenal title prediction | Football

Sergio Aguero has dismissed the suggestion Mikel Arteta should be under pressure at Arsenal and backed the Gunners to win the Premier League ‘sooner rather than later’.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher recently questioned whether Arteta’s Arsenal were already past their best despite failing to win any silverware since the Spaniard’s first season in charge.

Writing in a column for the Daily Telegraph, Carragher said: ‘Have we already witnessed the peak years of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reign?

‘It feels like this Emirates era is heading towards a crossroads, with Arsenal in the middle of a high-stakes game.

‘This will either be one of the greatest seasons in the club’s history – ending a 21-year wait for the Premier League title – or a campaign which ends amid a highly-charged post-season review into how they squandered their best chance to become champions in two decades.’

Carragher also questioned Arsenal’s title credentials as they look to make up ground on Premier League leaders Liverpool.

‘There is yet to be a performance that leaves you thinking they look like the next champions,’ he added. ‘The balance of the squad is not right.’

Arsenal have finished second for the past two seasons, narrowly missing out on the title despite amassing 84 and 89 points.

Arteta’s side looked best-placed to take advantage if Manchester City dropped off but Liverpool have moved six points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand.

Another season without silverware could make some Arsenal fans begin to turn on Arteta but Aguero believes this would be foolish as the club are capable of winning a title under the former Premier League midfielder.

‘I don’t see why Mikel Arteta should feel under pressure,’ ex-Manchester City striker Aguero, a five-time title winner, told Stake.

‘Look at where Arsenal were before he arrived and how they’ve evolved under his guidance.

‘They’ve been consistently competing at the top, which isn’t easy when you’re up against sides like Man City and Liverpool who have also been giving concerted efforts to take the trophy.

‘Arsenal, since entering this new cycle, have shown up consistently. They’ve got great players and a newfound trademark playing style.

‘The fans ought to be happy. I’m sure winning the Premier League is their end goal, and I believe it’s bound to happen sooner rather than later.’

While Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League, they are not showing the impressive consistency they did over the past two seasons.

The Gunners have dropped points in ten of their 22 league games and threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at the weekend.

In a difficult start to 2025, Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round by Manchester United, while they have a mountain to climb in their EFL Cup semi-final against Newcastle United.

Arsenal are fifth in the Champions League group phase as they look to secure automatic qualification to the knockout stages with two games remaining.

Arteta’s side face struggling Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night before returning to Premier League action at the weekend against Wolves.
