‘I hope you understand’ – Olympics star defects to Team GB after Paris 2024
Three-time Australian Olympic medallist Matthew Richardson has defected to Team GB following Paris 2024.
The track cycling star won three medals for Australia at the recent Olympic Games, claiming silvers in the individual sprint and keirin as well as bronze in the team sprint.
Richardson, 25, was born in England and grew up in Kent before moving to Western Australia at the age of nine with his family.
The Commonwealth Games champion has represented Australia since 2019 but has decided to switch nationality and ride for Great Britain going forward.
Announcing the decision in a post that started with the message ‘the end of an era’, Richardson said: ‘I have made the decision to pack up my entire life and move half way across the world to begin the next chapter in my cycling career.
