A House of the Dragon writer has revealed that they have been ‘baffled’ to see Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen become ‘the internet’s boyfriend’.
The first season of the Game of Thrones prequel series, which is set nearly 200 years before the events of the original show, is almost at its end.
So far, House of the Dragon has spanned over almost 30 years, with the peaceful days of King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) reign sadly leading to war.
Along the way, viewers have been equally disturbed and enthralled, especially by the show’s self-styled ‘rogue prince’, Daemon Targaryen.
But one of the show’s writers has revealed that she’s often ‘baffled’ when she looks online and sees how much people love him.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sara Hess, who has written two episodes so far, didn’t hide her confusion: ‘He’s become the Internet Boyfriend in a way that baffles me.’

She qualified her position by pouring praise on Matt Smith: ‘Not that Matt isn’t incredibly charismatic and wonderful, and he’s incredible in the role.’
But despite her affection for Smith, she couldn’t believe people had the hots for his character: ‘Daemon himself is… I don’t want him to be my boyfriend!’
She continued: ‘I’m a little baffled how they’re all, “Oh, daddy!” And I’m just like, “Really?” How, in what way, was he a good partner, father, or brother?”
Daemon has so far been shown to be a man of mixed emotions, capable of immense brutality but also fierce love and loyalty. Sound familiar?
After grooming his niece Rhaenyra and murdering his wife Rhea Royce, Daemon married Laena Velaryon and happily lived a life on the road for a decade.
He then returned to King’s Landing and was there to support his brother Viserys during the last days before his death.

But on the same day he helped his brother take the throne for the last time, he also sliced open a man’s head without much provocation.
Of course, the faction of the House of the Dragon fandom that Hess referred to didn’t take too kindly to her analysis of their favourite character.
‘Get them away from Sara Hess immediately,’ one fan captioned a post of Daemon Targaryen and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

‘Most of House of the Dragon Twitter didn’t even know Sara Hess’ name last week and in 24 hours she managed to p*** off everyone,’ another fan said.
Some angry viewers have even gone to the lengths of starting a petition to remove Hess from the writing team – it currently has just over 2,000 signatures.

However, the petition itself, and the reaction to Hess’ interview, have also received intense backlash from other media commentators and critics.
A loyal watcher said: ‘There is now a petition to get rid of Sara Hess and replace her with another writer. Yes, we have reached the petition stage. This fandom is an embarrassment.’
