Hollywood star Dean Stockwell dies aged 85
Dean Stockwell was a former child actor who became a key figure in the Hollywood counterculture and found success in popular TV shows. The actor died of “natural causes” at the age of 85.
The LA actor became a major name whilst still in high school, staring in the anti-racism parable The Boy With Green Hair in 1948 and alongside Errol Flynn in the 1950 adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s Kim.
But the transition from child star to adult actor was not smooth and after quitting university he attempted to re-establish his film career with a lead role in a 1959 crime film – Compulsion. For the role, he won the Best Actor award at Cannes Film Festival.
He went on to win another best actor award at Cannes for the 1962 adaptation of Long Day’s Journey into Night. He would continue to have steady work in TV, but was growing tired of the entertainment business. He joined Hollywood’s Topanga Canon hippy culture and largely dropped out of acting.
He returned to the screen in 1968 in Psych-Out and in Dennis Hopper’s epic The Last Movie in 1970.
Stockwell continued to associate with Hopper and other counter-culture figures but struggled to find work in the 70s, and by the early 80s had largely switched to selling real estate.
His career had a revival after he was cast in a small role in the 1984 adaptation of Dune, he then followed that film with a larger role in Paris, Texas. Blue Velvet would be his next role – another David Lynch film.
He was nominated for an Oscar for best-supporting actor for his role in the 1988 comedy Married to the Mob. By 1989, he had secured his most known TV role in the TV series Quantum Leap alongside Scott Bakula. The series ran until 1993 and Stockwell won three Emmy awards and a Golden Globe.
He continued to work steadily on TV and in Hollywood for the next two decades. He retired from acting in 2015 following a stroke.
