Paper Talk: Higher taxes are here to stay and tributes to teen stabbing victim

Friday’s front pages report on a variety of stories. There are reports on the upcoming Conservative Party Conference and what measures the PM will announce – which will likely set the new election battle line. There are tributes to the teen who was stabbed to death on her way to her school. The teen’s name and picture have been released and it’s believed she was trying to protect a friend who was arguing with an ex-boyfriend.

Elsewhere, many papers lead with a front-page tribute to Michael Gambon – the famed British actor best known for playing Dumbledore in Harry Potter.

    Tory Party conference

The Guardian says the prime minister is planning to put “car drivers first” in a “new election battle line” by limiting the number of 20mph speed restrictions.

The Daily Telegraph says the changes will be unveiled at next week’s Tory Party Conference. The paper says the PM is set to scale back schemes that limit vehicle usage on residential streets – known as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods – and make it easier for motorists to challenge parking fines.

    Rising tax burden

Several of the papers report on the analysis of the Institute of Fiscal Studies about the rising tax burden.

The Times says the shift to higher taxes under the Tories “may never be reversed”. Former PM Liz Truss tells the Telegraph that the “unprecedentedly high tax burden is one of the reasons that the British economy is stagnating”. The Daily Mail’s leader column says Rishi Sunak “insists he is at heart a tax-cutting Thatcherite,” but then asks: “When might we expect him to prove it?”

    Tributes to Elianne Andam

Many of the papers carry pictures of the 15-year-old stabbed to death on her way to school in London. The Sun says she had hoped to become a lawyer, and quotes her family as saying: “All those dreams have now been shattered.” The Daily Mirror says police officers “fought back tears” while attending a family tribute at the scene of the stabbing on Thursday night.
