Hezbollah media chief killed in Israeli strike on Beirut

Mohammed Afif, Hezbollah’s media chief and one of its prominent public figures, was killed in an Israeli air strike in central Beirut, the group confirmed. The strike targeted the Baath Party headquarters in the crowded Ras al-Naba neighbourhood, destroying much of the building, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.

Lebanese health officials reported four deaths and 14 injuries from the attack, though the identities of the other victims have not been disclosed. Rescue teams worked to free people trapped under the rubble. Hours later, another strike on Mar Elias Street in Beirut killed two more and injured 13, according to the health ministry.

The Israeli military has ramped up its strikes on Beirut despite efforts to broker a ceasefire. This follows a series of attacks that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other senior figures in late September, part of Israel’s larger offensive against the Iran-backed group.
