Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman teases what fans can expect in season 3: ‘There’s a lot of stuff we haven’t yet covered’

Warning: spoilers ahead for Heartstopper season 2.

Heartstopper season 2 might have only just come out, but fans are already desperate to know what could happen in season 3.

The latest episodes of the beloved Netflix show provided viewers with crucial developments for the lead characters’ storylines, including Charlie (Joe Locke), Nick (Kit Connor), Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao).

So what could be in store for them in the next, already-confirmed outing? Metro.co.uk spoke to creator Alice Oseman to find out some details.

In season three of the series, there’s a bigger focus on mental health, with Nick feeling increasing levels of pressure over the prospect of coming out as bisexual, and at a crucial point during an exam finding that he’s unable to concentrate at all.

Charlie, on the other hand, is so intent on making sure that Nick’s coming out is ‘perfect’ and that his boyfriend doesn’t suffer the same bullying that he did when he was outed that he refrains from sharing the effect that the stress is also having on him.

Later on in the season, Charlie reveals to Nick that he suffers from an eating disorder, and in the finale opens up about how he used to self-harm.

Addressing what’s to come in the third season, Alice – who wrote and illustrated the novel and web series on which the show is based – stressed that mental health will be a focal point in the future.

‘People who have read the books will know that there’s a lot of stuff we haven’t yet covered in volume four, which is out now,’ she said, given season one covered volumes one and two, and season two covered volume three of her written works.

‘But there’s also going to be volume five, which is coming out in December, and there’ll be a volume six as well. So there’s a lot of story left for the show to go into season three.’

The writer continued: ‘In season two we’ve started to explore mental health in a big way, and I think it’s pretty obvious from the way we leave the season that is going to be a big element of season three.

‘We’re going to continue to look at that in a big way and explore how that affects Nick and Charlie’s relationship, and all of the other friendships in the show.

‘So people who’ve read volume four will have a little bit of an idea of what is coming. I’m really excited to take the show into that new place.’

Heartstopper fans have been full of praise for the show’s depiction of mental health and difficult issues in season three, such as Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) fractured relationship with her mother, which results in her running away from home.

One person tweeting: ‘I love the fact that the show didn’t shy away from talking about Charlie’s mental health or Darcy’s home life.

‘It showed both of these things and did a really good job. It really helped people who are going through the same things.’

‘Joe Locke did such an amazing job portraying Charlie’s mental health this season, legit had me bawling almost every other scene. I just know I’ll be crying [in] season 3 as well,’ another wrote.

Heartstopper is available to watch on Netflix.
