‘He came up with the goods’ – Ian Wright hails Marcel Sabitzer’s performance in ‘no10 role’ as Man Utd beat Brentford

Ian Wright believes Marcel Sabitzer has offered Erik ten Hag another option in the no10 role after impressing in Manchester United’s win over Brentford.

After two defeats in their last three league games, United got back to winning ways on Wednesday night with Marcus Rashford’s first-half strike sealing a 1-0 win over the Bees.

The Austria international, signed from Bayern Munich on loan on the final day of the January transfer window, was named in the starting XI alongside Scott McTominay in midfield with Casemiro still serving a four-match suspension.

Bruno Fernandes took up a deeper role on the night however, with Sabitzer given licence to get forward.

The 29-year-old, who scored his first goal for the club in the FA Cup victory over Fulham last month, provided the assist for Rashford’s goal with Arsenal legend Wright impressed with his contribution in a more advanced role.

‘You have to say, Sabitzer came up with the goods today,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.

‘With the assist and in certain other areas, he was getting into pockets, making some nice little moves and always making himself available.

‘He got taken off in the end but I thought he did more than enough tonight in that no10 position.’

Victory moves United back into the top four although Newcastle United’s crushing 5-1 win over West Ham United kept them in third place.

Rashford’s latest goal took his tally to 28 for the season, the joint-highest haul for a United player in one season in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Reacting to his forward’s performance, ten Hag said: ‘Great finish. Once again, he is on top and in very good form so hopefully, he can keep doing it until the end of the season. Keep that focus and those energy levels and then he will score.”

‘This is a massive win – I admire Brentford, they play against top teams and they get results. I am really proud of my team, really happy.

‘We want to play as a machine and not make mistakes – we made one mistake and thankfully, they didn’t benefit from it.’
