The beloved BBC series Ghosts has finally come to an end – and it’s safe to say, fans are ‘gutted’ to say goodbye.
The comedy first premiered in 2019, starring Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as couple Alison and Mike Cooper who move into a house inherited from a distant relative which is inhabited by an array of rowdy ghosts.
The show has been critically-acclaimed ever since, receiving a nod at the Baftas for scripted comedy in 2021.
So it came as no surprise that fans were devastated to find out that it would be drawing to a close with the end of its fifth season with its Christmas Day episode this year.
In the grand finale, the ghosts convince Alison and Mike to sell their house to a hotel company, so that they’ll no longer cause any disruption to their lives with their newborn daughter Mia.
While it might seem as though that’s the end of the couple’s interactions with the friendly spirits, years into the future, it’s revealed that Alison and Mike – now in old age – regularly stay in their ‘usual suite’ at the hotel, allowing the former to reunite with her friends.

The revelation that they all remained close years into the future, and speculation that perhaps Alison could join the ghosts if she dies in the house, sparked floods of tears from viewers, several of whom praised the ‘perfect’ ending.
‘The ending of #Ghosts destroyed me, I wasn’t ready I cried so much I’m gonna miss them.
But It puts a smile on my face knowing that Alison always came back to visit the guys on Christmas,’ one fan wrote on X.
‘I wasn’t prepared for that ending. Weeping,’ another said.
One person described the finale as the ‘perfect ending’, thanking the show ‘for the memories’ over the past four years.
Someone else congratulated Ben Willbond, who co-created, co-wrote and starred in Ghosts as The Captain, on such a successful run.
‘Gutted for the end of #BBCGhosts one of the most original and funny comedies to come out of the BBC. 😭,’ they added.
Praising the emotional ending, a viewer said: ‘I’m. In, Bits. What a fantastic end to #Ghosts ! How can this little show touch your heart so?
‘No I’m not crying – YOU are ! Bravo to all the cast & writers. And ending with the pit dwellers – master class!’
Expressing their sadness over saying goodbye, one fan commented: ‘Absolutely sobbing at the end of the #Ghosts Christmas special. Such a beautiful ending. But going to miss the characters soooooo much.’
Another added: ‘Lovely ending to #ghosts but very sad all the same. It’s been one of the great series, and this was a really good way to end. Can’t wait to see what the team do next.’

Ghosts ending with its fifth season was announced in March this year, with the announcement reading: ‘After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace.
‘We have just wrapped filming on our fifth and final series and we can’t wait to share it with you all later this year.
‘We could never have imagined the reception the show has enjoyed, or the fun we have had making it, and we would like to thank our amazing cast and crew as well as everyone at BBC Comedy, BBC1 and Monumental Television for their tireless support.’
The message was signed by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben, the creators of the show.
Ghosts is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
