Gen. Rick Hillier emphasizes the importance of sharing the stories of Canadian heroes

Canadian heroes inspire me, especially now, in a time when cynicism and self-interest often dominate. This sentiment is echoed by Gen. (ret’d) Rick Hillier, who is spearheading a special series called Heroes Among Us, in collaboration with the National Post, True Patriot Love Foundation, Historica Canada, and entrepreneur Kevin Reed. The series aims to celebrate Canadian military valour and honor those who have shown exceptional courage in the face of the enemy.

The series will highlight 10 heroic Canadians who could potentially be the first-ever recipients of the Canadian Victoria Cross, a prestigious award created three decades ago as a homegrown version of the Commonwealth’s highest award for valour. The recipients will be celebrated at a gala event on June 26 at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Hillier pays tribute to legendary figures such as Sgt. Tommy Prince, who served in both the Second World War and the Korean War and was one of Canada’s most-decorated Indigenous soldiers. He also honors individuals like Jess Larochelle, whose valour in Afghanistan earned him the Star of Military Valour, Canada’s second-highest award for bravery in the presence of the enemy.

Despite the remarkable stories of these heroes, Hillier laments that their inspiration remains largely unknown to many Canadians. He points out that unlike in the United States, where military heroes are often portrayed in Hollywood films, Canadian heroes are often overlooked in mainstream media and entertainment.

Hillier emphasizes the importance of sharing these stories to inspire Canadians of all backgrounds and ages. He believes that by honoring the sacrifices and service of these individuals, we reinforce the values that define us as a nation and pay tribute to the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice.

In conclusion, Hillier calls on Canadians to ensure that the stories of these heroes are told and their service continues to be recognized and celebrated. He expresses his deepest gratitude to all those who have served and sacrificed for the nation, inspiring him and countless others to strive for a better Canada.
