Gareth Southgate, unlike his predecessors, has ownership of England’s players – clubs no longer have all the power

The Times says I woke up last week in a parallel universe in which the England manager was king of all managers and the men tasked with bringing success to the biggest clubs in the world were meek and mild chaps who accepted proclamations placed upon them.

Football has shifted on its axis. After announcing his squad for the World Cup qualifiers, Gareth Southgate explained he had to drop Jadon Sancho because the 21-year-old has yet to cement a role at Old Trafford. Southgate made it clear he is not particularly interested in reputation or price tag and that he would rather give a space to players performing more regularly than the winger who signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73million.
