Cliff Notes – Games Inbox: Will GTA 6 be on Nintendo Switch 2

    • There are concerns regarding the graphical capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2, particularly in relation to high-profile titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and GTA 6, with speculation about whether it can match the visuals of current-gen consoles.
    • The pricing strategy for the Switch 2 is under scrutiny, as there are fears that Nintendo’s decision to avoid a price increase in the US may lead to higher costs for international customers, particularly in the UK.
    • The launch lineup for the Switch 2 has disappointed some fans, with a lack of anticipated first-party titles, leading to cancellations of pre-orders as consumers await more compelling exclusive game announcements.

Games Inbox: Will GTA 6 be on Nintendo Switch 2?

The Monday letters page looks forward to Star Wars Zero Company, as one reader explains why they’ve cancelled their Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order.

Surely this is impossible on the Switch 2?

    The grail
I’m seeing rumours about Assassin’s Creed Shadows coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and I wouldn’t be surprised. Or at least I wouldn’t be surprised that Ubisoft is trying but I would be shocked if it looked anywhere near as good, because Shadows is lowkey one of the best-looking games of recent years.

Cyberpunk 2077 is no slouch either and we’ve already had hands-on reports for that. My question is just how far can it go? What’s the most graphically impressive game the Switch 2 could manage? If it’s as powerful as a PlayStation 4 does that mean we could get a game that looks as good as Horizon Forbidden West or God Of War Ragnarök – both of which are cross-gen?

If that’s possible then what about the holy grail of GTA 6? I know the trailer looked impossible even on a PlayStation 5 but as people are keen to point out, Rockstar and Nintendo do get on pretty well and I’m sure that when the game started development it was aiming for the PlayStation 4 – so perhaps there’s a way to get it working on Switch 2 using those early experiments.

    Worldwide problem
I’m sure Americans are happy the Switch 2 isn’t getting a price increase but why do I get the feeling that the money Nintendo is losing on that is going to be passed onto the rest of the fans around the world. There’s no reason we should suffer but I bet we do.

After all this wait, it’s very unfortunate timing for Nintendo and I do feel sorry for them to a degree. Their refusal to announce a lot of the UK prices is very suspicious though and I fear that whatever thy were going to be they’re now going to get a price hike. Likewise. those games that have no price anywhere, like Hyrule Warriors, I worry are going to be more than was originally intended.

    Old problem
I don’t know what to think of that Star Wars Outlaws trailer for the Switch 2. It definitely doesn’t look as good as the PlayStation 5 version, but it still looks okay, about as good as you’d expect I suppose? There’s not really anything to compare it to at the moment, so it’s hard to know whether to be disappointed or impressed. I think probably I’m just neutral about it though.

The obvious problem is what are Ubisoft going to charge for it? The PlayStation 5 version is officially £70 but it’s been on cheap almost since it came out. If Ubisoft were sensible they’d make it so it’s only £50 or so but I can’t see that. So who wants an inferior version of a year old game that costs more? It’s the same old problem of any third party game on a Nintendo console.

    Andor: The Video Game
I share GC’s enthusiasm for Star Wars Zero Company and I’m a lot more interested now that it seems like it will have permadeath and some sort of meta strategy element, which they didn’t make clear in the trailer.

I’m not sure even Star Wars can help make these games a hit but I’m glad they’re at least trying, because I love XCOM and almost anything else similar to it.

I’m not sure I really get the Clone Wars setting though, as that seems a bit limiting, given how little danger battle droids are in small numbers. I would’ve thought that the getting a crew together for covert ops thing would’ve been better for something set closer to the original trilogy too – especially if it leaned into the style of Andor.

Not that I’m going to complain though, any big budget new turn-based strategy is good by me.

    Budget birthday
I know the Inbox likes to celebrate non-significant anniversaries, so I’d just thought I’d point out that Fire Emblem was 35 on Sunday. I’m sure none of us played it back then, because it was Japanese-only for a long time, but it’s a neat bit of trivia.

The obvious question is how long will it be before a new game is announced for the Switch 2? Not long, I imagine, but I’m curious to see what it is. Three Houses did unexpectedly well but it was very low budget, then Nintendo followed that up with Engage… which looked even cheaper. I get that turn-based games don’t usually get a lot of money spent on them, but I’d like to see at least one attempt with Fire Emblem. It was always one of the best looking 3DS games.
    Onibee

    Combat re-evolved
There’s always a lot of talk about when Halo will eventually turn up on PlayStation or Switch but what I don’t hear is what is Microsoft actually going to do with the franchise now? It’s only four years since Halo Infinite but it feels like forever, with that game being such a failure I’m almost surprised they didn’t just give up on the series.

Although I guess they have essentially, as there doesn’t seem any hope of anything new coming out anytime soon and even when it does the rumours say the first game is going to be another remake. I imagine that’s going to be the first one to go multiformat because, let’s face it, PlayStation and Switch owners are not going to be impressed by Halo Infinite.

The problem is that any new game is going to bring with it so much baggage that the only sensible option is a full reboot, but do Microsoft have the guts for that? I’ve played almost all the Halo games, and I didn’t have a clue what was going on in Infinite and I’m sure that didn’t help its sales.

They need to make the remake the new Halo 1 and carry on from there. If it was possible they should’ve got Bungie to do it, but now Sony own them. It’d be some irony if they sold them back to Microsoft though, given how badly things have worked out for them at PlayStation.

Bungie is one of the best known developers in the world and yet they’ve been owned and bought so many times you’d think they were some useless indie developer.

    Proper upset
We’ve seen a lot of back and forth on the Switch 2 over the last few weeks, for obvious reasons. but for me the biggest disappointment was finding out that The Duskbloods was multiplayer only. That instantly means I have no interest in it and it means two multiplayer games in a row from FromSoftware.

When are we going to learn what their next proper game is? I know they don’t see it like that, but I am desperate for a new single-player game from them and at this rate I’m not going to get one for at least two or three years.

    Fool me once
Switch 2 is exactly what I wanted, but I’m going to cancel my pre-order.

The Switch is hands down my favourite console. I have loved Nintendo games since The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time on the N64. After playing text-based adventure games like The Hobbit on the Spectrum, I dreamed of a game like Ocarina Of Time, where you could see your character traverse the landscape and fight in 3D. Minus the Wii U, I have owned every Nintendo console since.

The functionality of the Switch was, literally, a game-changer for me. Being able to take my favourite games on holiday or instantly swapping to handheld mode when the wife wanted to watch Eastenders was a blessing I didn’t know I needed.

Ever since rumours of the Switch 2 first started circulating several years ago, I prayed they would keep the same form, just more powerful and maybe with a new Nintendo style gimmick thrown in for good measure.

Now it’s been announced, I find myself seriously underwhelmed. I won’t use the camera and the chat, and mouse options didn’t really grab me either.

I love Nintendo for their unique first party offerings, but their launch games have left me disappointed. Given the time since the previous one I was expecting a new 3D Mario at least announced, even if not releasing day one. I also had, I don’t think unreasonable, expectations for a new Animal Crossing.

For me Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza are not system sellers. With Metroid Prime 4 I’m concerned we will have a long period of cross-generational releases, especially with the huge userbase of the original Switch.

I had my fingers burnt with PlayStation 5, which I also got day one and still haven’t used for anything I couldn’t have done on my PlayStation 4. My fault entirely for getting caught up in the hype, but I don’t want to repeat the same mistake again. Until we get more exciting first party games, Switch 2 exclusive releases announced I’m happy to stick with my original.
AjH (reader since the days of Teletext)

GC: So far, Metroid Prime 4 is the only first party game confirmed to be cross-generational, no doubt because work on it began long before the Switch 2 was announced. Mario Kart 8 is Nintendo’s best-selling game ever, so to suggest World isn’t a system seller is a bit odd.

How much does the new Nintendo Switch cost?
    Paula

GC: It’s £395.99 or £429.99 with a digital copy of Mario Kart World.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen any game leaked as much as Oblivion. I really hope it gets announced this week because I am absolutely sick of hearing about it.
