Games Inbox: The setting of the next God Of War, PlayStation Portal, and Blasphemous 2 appreciation

God Of War Ragnarök – where should Kratos go next? (pic: Sony)

The Monday letters page wishes Nintendo would make more realistic games like Excitebike, as one reader wants suggestions on new PS5 games.

    Intermediate adventure
I don’t think fans are going to be too happy when the next game Sony announces is just God Of War DLC but I think the idea of a standalone expansion that bridges the gap to the next story would be a good idea. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was good, but the story was just kind of random and didn’t build on anything or set anything up for the next game.

We never got to see why or how Kratos and Atreus got to Scandinavia and if they just turn up in Egypt, or wherever, at the start of the next game I think that’d be a bit odd, as based on what happened at the end of Ragnarök there’s not really any reason to move.

I think they’ll just put it down to wanderlust, but I think a transitional adventure could be a lot of fun and not something that I think games have ever really done before. I do think it will be Egypt though. Maybe there are other pantheons that are just as interesting but they’re not as well-known and Egypt’s gods and mythology just seems really cool and interesting.

I do wonder what they’re going to do when they run out of famous ancient religions though, because I’m pretty sure they’re not going to have Kratos beating up any current religious figures. Although I do find the idea of him living in the modern day kind of interesting.

    New owner
Well, I just bit the bullet and bought a PlayStation 5, taking advantage of the current cheap deals. £400 for a next gen console sounds pretty good to me, and plenty of my PlayStation 4 games can be upgraded to the new console.

I’m not sure what new games to get though and would welcome readers’ suggestions. I like most things, but Gran Turismo 7 is the only one I would rule out. I’m also not super enthused about Ratchet & Clank but I know it’s one of the few PlayStation 5-only games so I might be interested on that basis (and if it’s cheap).

I’m excited about being a new owner and I think some hardcore fans forget that for those that don’t have a next gen console yet, or are just getting on this year, Sony’s silence doesn’t really mean much. As long as it doesn’t last beyond this year it won’t make any difference to me.

    Godly sequel
I just thought I’d write in to say how much I’m enjoying Blasphemous 2. The first one was good, but I didn’t find it enjoyable to play but this one so far is so much better. I could go on about how certain mechanics have improved, but people could just read your review instead.

No, I thought I’d mention a very entertaining boss that stood out for me, where it played out almost like a duel; she with her rapier type sword and me blocking and countering with my dual short swords. A great back and forth fight with the music increasing in tempo the more life you took off her. Put a smile on my face doing that boss. Great game so far.

    Nintendo realism
I saw Excitebike 64 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online soon (if you have the Expansion Pack) and I’m really looking forward to playing it again. I really enjoyed Wave Race 64 and I’m sure this will stand up well too. It reminds you that Nintendo use to make quite a lot of ‘realistic’ games back in the day and I’d like to see them going back to that.

Sequels to Excitebike and Wave Race are the obvious ones but I’d like to see what a moderately realistic Nintendo car game looked like (an update of Stunt Race FX). It’d be great to bring Pilotwings back too, as the more realistic simulation it was back in the Nintendo 64 days, rather than the bland party game it became in the Wii era.

I’m sure Nintendo could think up lots of way to make usually dull ideas seem interesting and I hope that the success of the relatively more serious Zelda games will give them the encouragement they need to give it a go.

    Feature parity
Can Microsoft not implement scaling on their games for consoles? Would this be an option to help performance on the Xbox Series S? Or make it simple.

Start the game and select the console you’re using when you start the game, and the game downscales for you automatically.

    Just a thought.
    Bobwallett

GC: It already downscales for things like resolution and frame rate, that’s not the issue. The problem is that Microsoft wants games to have the same features and modes on both consoles, and the Xbox Series S can’t handle split-screen for Baldur’s Gate 3.

    New text
Just for a thought on the PlayStation Portal.

How will it look for some modern games?

Quite a while back, as in years, I was on the beta for Xbox cloud streaming. I bought a clip to attach my mobile phone to an Xbox One pad.

It was proper awesome and it achieves everything the Portal does. So maybe highlights a delayed ‘me to’ response from Sony.

But one massive issue I find is how some (well, quite a few) games are rendered a bit tricky due to the size of onscreen text.

Using it on a 7 or 10-inch tablet does improve it, so it’s directly related to the size of the screen.

I am into retro gaming, and everything up to GameCube and PlayStation 2 looks fine on a small screen, scales down, and is still readable/workable.

Newer 4K stuff, not so much.

    An unwelcome surprise
I really do wonder about some people online but this guy trying to sell copies of Starfield while he streams it… I would love to know how he thought that was going to work. After it all went down did someone quietly explain to him that everything he’s been doing is illegal and he had a massive panic attack. How did he think it wasn’t illegal? I would love to know.

I’m actually fine with these people get a reasonably big fine or even some community service. Some people need a knock on the head to remind them that the world isn’t as consequence free as they seem to believe. Especially as it often affects normal people, when publishers start tightening the rules for everyone.

    Format preferences
In answer to a previous letter, and as a PlayStation 5 owner since the start, I have to say that I have zero interest in Baldur’s Gate 3. I’ve watched some videos and streams but I find the distant camera and constant dialogue very off-putting. I don’t want to come across as uncultured but it’s just not from me or what I look for in a video game.

I agree that it is a very PC style of game and will probably not do all that well on consoles. The controls along sound like they’d be a major problem, as well as things like the interface that doesn’t seem like it’s going to be very readable on a typical TV.

Some style of games are just better suited to some formats. I don’t think I’ve ever played a 3D platformer on a PC, and very few 2D ones, but they feel right at home on a console. I don’t even think it’s necessarily a problem, it’s just different machines attract different types of games and different types of people.

You can see with these ports of PlayStation games to the PC that no matter how well some games review they just won’t sell that well on some formats. I believe we’ll see that with Baldur’s Gate 3 on the PlayStation 5.

Would you believe it’s taken me nine years to discover the PlayStation 3’s power is universal? That an American PlayStation 3 will work in England? Is it the same with the PlayStation 4 and 5?
    Henry

GC: We’ve never had cause to find out.

I just read the Switch Vampire Survivors review. Good stuff. Just one error, there are actually no vampires in Vampire Survivors.
    Adam D

GC: They look like Draculas to us.

    This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Frpgman, who asks what is your favourite side character in a video game?

Assuming a side character is anyone that’s not playable or the primary antagonist, which is your favourite character who’s not the main focus of the game? It doesn’t matter how long they’re in the game for but tell us why you enjoyed them and how well you feel they were used.

Is the character popular and did they ever turn up in any sequels? If not, why do you think nobody else took to them like you did?
