Covid: England’s virus levels ‘may have risen’ in January

BBC News says scientists tracking the spread of coronavirus in England say infection levels in the community may have risen at the start of lockdown 3.

Swab tests indicate 1.58% had the virus during the period 6-15 January, with the highest level, 2.8%, in London.

The Imperial College London researchers say there was “no strong evidence” of these high infection levels.

The past few days have seen a clear slowdown in the number of lab-confirmed cases reported daily by the government.

France24 says President Macron has ruled out issuing an official apology for abuses in Algeria, his office said, ahead of a major report on how France is facing up to its colonial past in the country.

Europe-bound migrants drown in shipwreck off Libya

Arab News says a boat carrying migrants bound for Europe capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, drowning at least 43 people, the U.N. migration agency said.

The “tragic” shipwreck that took place a day earlier was the first maritime disaster in 2021 involving migrants seeking better lives in Europe.

The EU has partnered with Libya’s coast guard and other local groups to stem such dangerous sea crossings. Rights groups say those policies leave migrants at the mercy of armed groups or confined in squalid detention centres rife with abuses.
