BBC News says scientists tracking the spread of coronavirus in England say infection levels in the community may have risen at the start of lockdown 3.
Swab tests indicate 1.58% had the virus during the period 6-15 January, with the highest level, 2.8%, in London.
The Imperial College London researchers say there was “no strong evidence” of these high infection levels.
The past few days have seen a clear slowdown in the number of lab-confirmed cases reported daily by the government.

CityAM says Rishi Sunak is reportedly set to extend the government’s furlough scheme beyond the end of April in his 3 March Budget.
The chancellor is drawing up plans to extend the £82bn scheme into the summer as the UK looks set to have strict Covid restrictions in place for several months.
The scheme, which sees the government pay up to 80 per cent of wages up to £2,500 a month, was originally supposed to end last October.

France24 says President Macron has ruled out issuing an official apology for abuses in Algeria, his office said, ahead of a major report on how France is facing up to its colonial past in the country.
There will be “no repentance nor apologies” for the occupation of Algeria or the bloody eight-year war that ended French rule, Macron’s office said, adding that the French leader would instead take part in “symbolic acts” aimed at promoting reconciliation.

Arab News says a boat carrying migrants bound for Europe capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, drowning at least 43 people, the U.N. migration agency said.
The “tragic” shipwreck that took place a day earlier was the first maritime disaster in 2021 involving migrants seeking better lives in Europe.
The EU has partnered with Libya’s coast guard and other local groups to stem such dangerous sea crossings. Rights groups say those policies leave migrants at the mercy of armed groups or confined in squalid detention centres rife with abuses.

TRT World says President Joe Biden has signed a series of executive orders to launch his administration, including a decision to rejoin the Paris climate accord and a mask mandate for all federal buildings.
The orders included keeping the United States in the WHO, ending the ban on entries from mostly Muslim-majority countries, bolstering environmental protections and strengthening the fight against Covid-19.
Also among the directives was a halt to construction of the wall on the US-Mexico border, and efforts to expand diversity and equality for minority groups in the federal government.

VOA says Indigenous people in Brazil’s rainforest are getting their long-awaited first doses of a vaccine, which has infected thousands in their community and killed hundreds of others.
The Brazilian military flew medical workers and 1,000 doses of the CoronaVac vaccine into the Amazon rainforest and began vaccinating the indigenous people, who celebrated the arrival of the vaccine.

Dubai has suspended entertainment activities in restaurants and hotels as a precaution against the continued rise in coronavirus cases in the country.
In circular to owners and managers of hotels and restaurants in the emirate, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing said that field inspections have discovered “an increase in violations during entertainment activities in hotels and restaurants.”
