Ben Elton is reviving Friday Night Live for a one-off special tonight on Channel 4, featuring a special guest appearance from Harry Enfield.

The comedian, 63, will be bringing back the beloved stand-up and entertainment show as part of the celebrations for Channel 4’s 40th anniversary.

Rosie Jones, Julian Clary, and Jo Brand will also appear on the bill as part of the star-studded line-up at 9pm.

In its original run, Elton hosted the series and featured the likes of Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and, of course, Harry Enfield as part of his comedy team.

Enfield, 61, will be reprising his iconic characters Loadsamoney and Stavros, who will both be returning with new looks for 2022.

The show is also set to feature the return of Channel 4’s most mischievous prankster, the Fonejacker, and his character Terry Tibbs.

The show changed its name to Friday Night Live in 1988, when it ran for a third and final season. It then took five years off before coming back, under the name Friday Night Live Lives Again, for a one-off special in 1993 for Red Nose Day.

Three years later in 1996, it returned once more to our living rooms and kept its Saturday name when ITV resurrected the series for a longer run of episodes. However, it ended again after just eight airings.

The show was brought back most recently in December 2007 for Saturday Live Again, which again was by ITV. On that occasion it was presented by Marcus Bridgstocke and featured Jimmy Carr on its line-up of comedy talent.

The latest special marks a week of celebrations and festivities as Channel 4 acknowledges its 40th anniversary. As part of the line-up on Friday night, British comic legend Harry Enfield will be coming back to the series.

The special will also feature musical performances from Mercury Prize nominee Self-Esteem, who will be doing renditions of songs from her breakout album Prioritise Pleasure.

Jo Brand will also take to the Friday Night Live stage again. She’ll be taking the stage alongside some newcomers to the show, including comedians Rosie Jones, Ronni Ancona, Mawaan Rizwan, and Jordan Gray.

Watch Friday Night Live on Channel 4, October 21 at 9pm.
