Former Chelsea star scores special ‘Olimpico’ goal in Champions League
Former Chelsea star Christian Pulisic scored a special ‘Olimpico’ goal for AC Milan in their Champions League win over Club Brugge on Tuesday.
An ‘Olimpico’ goal occurs when a player finds the back of the net directly from a corner kick, which is exactly what Pulisic managed to do for the Italian side.
The United States international’s inswinging corner from the left deceived Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and a number of defenders as it flew into the back of the net.
It marks the first ‘Olimpico’ goal of Pulisic’s career and the 26-year-old, who moved to AC Milan from Chelsea in 2023, was quizzed about it after the match.
‘Today I was a bit lucky, but it still counts as a goal!’ Pulisic said after AC Milan’s 3-1 victory at the San Siro.
‘I’m very happy. I didn’t try to score directly but it was a good cross and then a nice goal came out.
‘I work very hard every day and I always want to be decisive in the matches. I’m scoring a lot of goals and assists, I hope to continue like this.’
Pulisic has been in fine form for AC Milan this season, conjuring up five goals and three assists across his opening eight Serie A matches.
The American was lauded by his manager, Paulo Fonseca, after AC Milan’s 1-0 win over Udinese on Saturday.
‘Christian’s game was fantastic,’ Fonseca told DAZN. ‘This is the spirit that we must always have.’
United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, recently expressed concerns over Pulisic’s workload.
‘He is playing every single game, every single minute, that is also a thing that we are a little bit worried (about),’ he said.
‘Sometimes we need to protect, we will see, because he arrived a little bit tired, but that is a thing that I told before – to build a very good relationship with the club and try to help and when we really need him, he needs to be in form, happy, strong. The quality is there because he has an enormous talent, he is a fantastic player.’
