Folic acid to be added to flour sold in UK to help cut spinal conditions in newborn babies
The i says folic acid will be added to nearly all flour sold in the UK in an attempt to reduce the number of serious spinal conditions suffered by new-born babies.
Pregnant women and those who are trying for a baby are already advised to take folic acid supplements to limit the risk their baby will suffer a deficit of folate, also known as Vitamin B9, which helps the body make red blood cells.
Folate deficiency can result in conditions such as spina bifida because the foetus does not develop properly in its first 12 weeks.
